How Long Does It Take to Build a Website? Realistic Timelines for 2026

"How long will it take?" ranks just behind "how much does it cost" in questions we hear — and the answers online range from "24 hours" to "six months." Both can be true, because timeline depends entirely on scope and process. Here are the realistic numbers for 2026, what each phase involves, and the one factor that delays more projects than everything else combined.

Realistic Timelines by Project Type

  • ✓One-page / landing page: 3–7 days. Design, copy polish, build, test, launch. Fast because the scope is tight and decisions are few.
  • ✓Small business site (5–10 pages): 2–4 weeks. This is the most common project. Design concepts, revisions, content formatting, SEO setup, testing across devices.
  • ✓E-commerce site: 4–8 weeks. Product catalogs, payment integration, shipping and tax configuration, and far more testing — every checkout path must work flawlessly. Our e-commerce checklist shows why.
  • ✓Custom web application: 8+ weeks. User accounts, dashboards, integrations — scoped individually.

Anyone promising a full custom multi-page site in 48 hours is either using a rigid template with your logo pasted in, or skipping testing and SEO. Ask which — the answer tells you everything. (For costs alongside timelines, see our pricing guide.)

The 5 Phases of a Professional Build

Phase 1: Discovery (1–3 days)

Understanding your business, customers, competitors, and goals. This is the phase amateurs skip — and it is why their sites look nice but convert nothing. Expect questions about your customers, not just your color preferences.

Phase 2: Design (30–40% of the timeline)

Homepage concept first, then interior pages. You review, request revisions, approve. Good agencies limit revision rounds in the contract (typically 2–3) — not to restrict you, but to keep the project moving.

Phase 3: Content (the wildcard)

Formatting and uploading your text, images, and assets — plus shaping content so it converts. This phase has the most variable length because it depends on you (more on that below).

Phase 4: Development & SEO setup (20–30%)

Building the approved design into a fast, responsive, working site: mobile responsiveness (see why it matters), forms, integrations, on-page SEO, schema markup, speed optimization.

Phase 5: Testing & launch (3–5 days)

Cross-device and cross-browser checks, form testing, speed passes, analytics setup, then launch with monitoring. Rushed launches skip this — and broken contact forms cost real money.

The #1 cause of delays is content. In our experience, more projects stall waiting for client text and photos than for any other reason — by a wide margin. If you want your site live fast, start gathering your content (service descriptions, team photos, testimonials, logos) the day you sign, not the day we ask.

How to Keep Your Project on Schedule

  • 1.Prepare content early. Rough drafts are fine — we shape and format them. A blank page is the enemy.
  • 2.Give consolidated feedback. Collect thoughts from your team into one round of comments instead of five dribbles.
  • 3.Decide who approves. "Design by committee" — five people with veto power — is how 3-week projects become 3-month projects.
  • 4.Freeze the scope. New ideas mid-build ("can we also add a booking system?") restart phases. Note them for phase two.
  • 5.Respond within 48 hours. Every day feedback sits idle is a day added to the timeline.

The Bottom Line

Plan on 1 week for a landing page, 2–4 weeks for a business site, and 4–8 weeks for e-commerce — and know that your own responsiveness on content and feedback is the biggest variable you control.

When you are evaluating agencies, ask for their process phase by phase (our 12-point checklist has the full set of questions). And if you are ready to start, book a call — we will give you an honest timeline for your specific project on the first conversation.
